Françoise Gilot en Afrique
Music Notes on Gilot’s Travels “… my art is not an escape from everyday reality, but a song against fear.” - Françoise Gilot Françoise Gilot, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 101, stood as one of the legendary figures and outstanding artists of the 20th century. In addition to her eight-decade career as a painter, she authored numerous books on art theory, published and illustrated poetry books, taught at the university, and designed sets and costumes for dance performances. The exhibition "Rising Phoenix," on view at the Kunsthalle from 09.12.2023 to 04.02.2024, is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist's work to date. Gilot has compared her creative method of building images with colors and shapes to composing music, and music and dance have been important sources of inspiration.
On January 13, 2023, a concert organized in collaboration between the Transparent Sound New Music Festival, the Várfok Gallery, and the Kunsthalle Budapest showcased a selection of works by five contemporary composers related to Gilot and the exhibition. Composer Máté Balogh found inspiration in Françoise Gilot's monotypes from her 1981 trip to Senegal. ©Máté Balogh: Françoise Gilot en Afrique (2023) Premiere

www.kotta.info/en/product/15190/…-MATE-Three-Songs
Máté Balogh's (*1990) solo viola piece, Three Songs, completed in 2015, is based on the sound of folk music from three non-European peoples, but it does not evoke original folk melodies. Translating them into the composer's own musical language, the first piece imitates the overtone-based singing of Tibetan Buddhist monks, the second the quarter-tones of Armenian folk melodies, and the third the motif-repetition technique of the Navajo Indians.

Paian
Paian (2014)
Composer and glasses: Máté Balogh
Bass-recorder: János Bali
Recorded at Budapest Music Center, 2015.
A paean is a song or lyric poem expressing triumph or thanksgiving. In classical antiquity, it is usually performed by a chorus, but some examples seem intended for an individual voice (monody). It comes from the Greek παιάν (also παιήων or παιών), "song of triumph, any solemn song or chant." "Paeon" was also the name of a divine physician and an epithet of Apollo.
